Frank Talk about Your Drinking Problems
Do you have a drinking problem? I’m sorry to hear it. I’ll do my best to assist you. Please bear in mind that I’ll do a sight better answering queries such as, “Which is the appropriate whisky to serve in hot weather?” than “How do I quit drinking?” I have an opinion as to the first; I am puzzled as to why you should attempt the second.

Is this where I’m supposed write about ETOH? If so,
- My preferred Gin and Tonic gin is Sapphire. Expensive, and worth it.
- I always put cherry juice in my Manhattans. Please don’t deny me. And I’ll have two cherries, at least, if that’s all right with you. (And they don’t have to have stems, thank you very much … although stems make them easier to remove and eat. A dirty little secret … I actually eat the cherries in my drinks … that’s the fun part.)
- I believe the most important part of a cocktail is the glassware it’s served in. Bring on the fancy glasses in bright colors. Nothing beats a Manhattan in an art glass of dots and swirls. It’s a good thing I live in Seattle where glass is cool.

Bombay Blue Sapphire is indeed a very fine gin. And I wouldn’t dream of denying any young lady her wish of cherries in her drink; however, you do deny yourself the rich subtlety of a perfectly mixed Manhattan when you over-amplify the sweetness. Regarding matters of decorated glassware, I feel etched or cut glass provides ample adornment — the cocktail is the jewel, the glass the humble setting. But I certainly salute your enthusiasm. Perhaps on my next West Coast ramble we may argue the finer points over a Manhattan or two.
